In 2019 Türkiye decided to do something that seemed to be impossible: plant an enormous amount of trees in the shortest time.
It was a great success and showed that impossible is possible and others should take this as an example.
November 11 has been declared National Forestation Day in hope that such planting ceremonies will become an annual event for the Turkish public and will set an example for the world.
Eleven million saplings were planted in three hours in 2 023 locations in 81 provinces across Türkiye as part of the “Breath for the Future” campaign.
The Agriculture and Forestry Ministry that launched the campaign in late October plants the saplings on behalf of people who "adopted" them online. Thirteen million trees have been adopted so far.
As a result on 12 November, Guinness World Records announced that Türkiye has established a world record of planting most saplings in an hour at 303 150 trees.
In the last 30 years, Türkiye increased the number of trees by around 13%.
